Lisbon

  • This happens all year, including summer, so be prepared to have alt plans.
  • Until recently it was a bit of a “meh” city to visit, but it’s been quietly transforming.
  • In the corner of Faial, you will find a very unqiue looking natural landscape called the Capelinhos.
  • Get off the beaten path and experience the stunning landscapes of the Azores on two wheels.
  • Beyond the city, the island’s volcanic origins can be explored in places like Algar do Carvão, a mesmerizing lava cave adorned with stalactites and a crystal-clear underground lake.

Dubbed “the sunny island” by Azoreans, Santa Maria has summers with plenty of glorious beach weather – an oddity by Azores standards. The island is also home to Burro da Graciosa, an endangered species of donkey that has been rescued, protected and bred by a local nonprofit organization. Consider adding a two-day trip to Graciosa if you’re visiting neighbouring Terceira – or on a day trip, you could drive around the island and hit all the must-see spots. And on one of those pesky rainy days, when sightseeing goes out the window, stroll around the shopping center or catch a movie.

In case you’re wondering, you can NOT swim on the lake. A few years ago, we used to had a wild beach just for ourselves but you’ll likely find dozens of other people there too. Ponta Delgada is still the best choice of a hub to explore São Miguel. Until recently it was a bit of a “meh” city to visit, but it’s been quietly transforming.

Along the way, enjoy the beautiful landscapes, crossing streams and walking through dense, misty woodlands. Here, you can enjoy a soak in the warm waters heated by geothermal activity. This trail offers stunning views from the Pico das Camarinhas, followed by a descent μπρουσκέτεσ με προσούτο to the natural thermal pools in the ocean at Piscina Termal Natural. Along the way, the trail passes through several beautiful viewpoints, including the Cascatas da Ribeira Funda.
